2019 THEME: THE TOTAL NIGERIAN STUDENT: HOW TO BENEFIT FROM THE CANADIAN EDUCATION MODEL
In 2018, Canada welcomed more than 11,000 Nigerian students. Nigeria was Canada’s most important source of international students from Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigerians invest in tertiary education, thus the surge of Nigerian students in Canada and other western countries.
But not all Nigerians can travel abroad for advanced education. With over 180 million people in Nigeria, there are opportunities for more accredited colleges/universities from Canada to bring advanced tertiary education to Nigeria.
These opportunities allow Nigerians to receive Canadian academic and vocational education without leaving Nigeria. The results include students receiving accredited international education and becoming more competitive in the workplace.
As we aim to better educate the students in Nigeria, it is also important to note that teachers need to be trained and educated as well. Many Nigerian teachers both in the public and private sectors lack the basic training to be up to par with their western counterparts. This in turn leads to poor outcome in students.
There is an opportunity to invest in training teachers in Nigeria. With the right access to training platform in place, Nigerian teachers can be competitive with their western peers and feel motivated in educating their students who are the future of Nigeria.
